Link drew the sword from its pedestal, hoping to use it to protect the Triforce from Ganondorf. But as he was a child, he was not old enough to wield it. So the sword put him into stasis, and within the Sacred Realm he slept for seven years until the day he was old enough to bear the mantle of Hero of Time.
When he finally did return to Hyrule, he fulfilled his destiny, sealing Ganondorf away and restoring peace to the land.
